The act of removing mold from a house varies greatly from house to house, so this will be an attempt to explain the steps Absolute Clean normally takes and why.

The discovery of mold:

Some homeowners find mold because of its musty odor. Some see it growing in kitchen cabinets or on plasterboard. Mold may be found behind baseboards, in a wall during a remodeling, or one of our technicians might find mold while cleaning the ventilation system. The worst case scenario is when it is found searching for the cause of one or more occupants suffering from breathing difficulties or allergies.

There are thousands of types of mold. Very few of them are toxic, but many can cause allergy symptoms. There are also many people who are extremely sensitive to mold. Absolute Clean has the ability to collect air and lift samples for independent lab testing to discover the types of mold and health concerns associated with them (see the Mold Testing page on this website for more).

The moisture source:

Once mold had been discovered and the decision made to remove it, Absolute Clean brings its experts, special tools and equipment into play. Usually the first step is in stopping the source of moisture. Moisture is a constant in uncontrolled mold growth. Sometimes we are able to shut off the source of moisture, sometimes we cannot. It might be necessary to contact a contractor to fix a leaky roof, a plumber to fix water leaks or sewage backup, or a structural engineer to figure out why water is forcing its way into a basement—a sump pump may be needed.

Absolute Clean’s first step us usually to bring in as many high efficiency dehumidifiers as needed to dry out the area where the mold is growing. These units can remove gallons and gallons of water from the air every day. Mold stops growing once the relative humidity falls below 60%.

Mold Remediation, Mold Testing

Containment:

Mold spores are tiny. When disturbed, they drift around with the smallest air current and can contaminate an entire house; therefore, a logical place to begin containing the spores is by turning off the furnace/air-conditioner blower. The next step is the construction of a containment area. One must be built to keep the infestation in the smallest area possible. Our work team constructs a 6-mil plastic sheeting containment area around the contaminated area and to an exit. We then uses air scrubbers with HEPA filters to create a negative air pressure that draws the spores to the HEPA filters where they are trapped.

Mold Removal:

All materials contaminated by mold so deeply they cannot be salvaged are removed and carried through the confinement tunnel to the outside and placed in a dumpster. Materials that cannot be removed, like ceiling joists and wall studs, are cleaned by one of two methods. For small areas, they are scrubbed with brushes and an antimicrobial chemical until all mold is removed. For large areas, we use a dry ice blaster. All mold contaminated materials that are broken loose in the scrubbing or dry ice blasting are swept and vacuumed up with our four-stage HEPA vacuums. To finish off the mold removal, we do a complete ventilation system cleaning of all vent supply lines, cold air returns, feeder lines, main trunk lines, and furnace cavity.

Dry Ice Blasting the New CLEAN Way to Remove Mold

Mold treatments:

After the mold has been removed, our first mold treatment is to fog the entire ventilation system with an antimicrobial spray. Then we paint all scrubbed or dry ice blasted areas with a 5-year mold resistant guaranteed clear-coat paint. We use clear-coat paint so that the owners or any officials can easily inspect our work. The next treatment is to fog the entire house with an antimicrobial spray to eliminate any mold spores that have settled on any surfaces within the house. The final treatment is the use of ozone generators to kill off any remaining mold spores floating around in the rooms.

Mold Removal, Dry Ice

While at the end of all these steps the mold count in the house is effectively zero, it can never be totally zero. Every time someone comes inside or goes outside, new mold spores drift in. In a relatively short period of time, the mold count inside will correspond with the ambient level outside; but that level does not present a problem . . . unless a new source of interior moisture allows unrestrained growth.

“In 2004 the Institute of Medicine (IOM) found there was sufficient evidence to link indoor exposure to mold with upper respiratory tract symptoms, cough, and wheeze in otherwise healthy people; with asthma symptoms in people with asthma; and with hypersensitivity pneumonitis in individuals susceptible to that immune-mediated condition.”
