We do not want to bestow mold with any semblance of intelligence, but sometimes it hides. One might notice, since that leak under the sink, there has been an unpleasant musty smell in the kitchen and the basement, but no mold is visible.
Ignore it and it might go away—or it might show up later as mold growing all over the ceiling joists and drywall; becoming a health threat and a very expensive mold remediation problem. Usually, the safer path is to contact a professional to test for mold and find its hiding places. That is where Absolute Clean can save you thousands of dollars.
Toxic Mold in Homes - Stachybotrys Chartarum (Black Mold)
Absolute Clean has four ways of taking mold samples. Their certified professionals can set up the Zefon Bio-Pump to take air samples from the different floors of your house and a control sample from outside. They can also take tape-lift samples or swab samples much like crime scene technicians collecting evidence. The tape lifts are like lifting fingerprints (except they lift a sample of visible mold) and the swab uses a sterilized cotton swab like taking a DNA sample (except it swabs visible mold). They can also take a bulk sample. This is where a contaminated section of drywall, wood paneling, or ceiling joist is cut off for a sample. These samples are then sent to an independent lab to determine the concentration of mold spores (parts per million) the various strains of mold (there are thousands), and the risks to health from the identified strains.
While taking the air samples (each sample from the Zefon Bio-Pump takes twenty minutes), our mold professionals can often look around find physical evidence of mold contamination. It likes to hide behind baseboards, on ceiling joists or in the furnace. It grows in a wild assortment of colors which often blend with the background, but our techs know what to look for. If mold can be located, the technician can take a tape lift or swab of the mold and send it to the laboratory for identification.
Mold and How it Affects your Body
The laboratory’s turn-around time is usually less than a week. A “rush order” can be attached in cases where home occupants are suffering from breathing difficulties or allergies, and the results are returned within three days. These results are immediately passed on to the homeowner.
There are only a few truly toxic mold types found in the greater metropolitan St. Louis area. The primary one found growing in houses is a black mold called Stachybotrys chartarum or Stachybotrys atra. Stachybotrys is dangerous. Stachybotrys chartarum can cause respiratory bleeding, which is fatal in infants. Others exposed to Stachybotrys may experience breathing difficulties, coughing, headaches, dizziness, nausea, memory loss, asthma, bronchitis, and urinary tract infections.
While Stachybotrys is the most dangerous (toxic) mold in the metropolitan area, there are many which cause allergies, hay fever symptoms or breathing distress. If a member of your family is susceptible to breathing difficulties, identifying a dangerous or troublesome strain can allow Absolute Clean to begin remediation immediately. “In 2004 the Institute of Medicine (IOM) found there was sufficient evidence to link indoor exposure to mold with upper respiratory tract symptoms, cough, and wheeze in otherwise healthy people; with asthma symptoms in people with asthma; and with hypersensitivity pneumonitis in individuals susceptible to that immune-mediated condition.”
